They're active participants.

This is a huge distinction.

Most people - even those who adore animals - still unconsciously see them as the recipient of our care.

We rescue them. We heal them. We protect them.

I met a horse who flipped this notion on its head for me - and here’s what I learnt from this amazing, majestic being …

Just as many of us are remembering our own power and reclaiming our sovereignty, perhaps the animals are inviting us to see theirs too. I think it helps us to remember this.

It can be easy to look at an animal in a difficult situation and feel only pity. Our hearts ache for them, and compassion is a beautiful thing. But pity and compassion are not the same.

Compassion inspires us to act with kindness.

Whereas pity can quietly strip another being of their power.

What if, alongside our desire to help, we also held space for the possibility that this animal is more than a victim? That beneath the circumstances is a soul with its own wisdom, purpose and agency - one we may never fully understand.

This doesn't excuse cruelty, nor does it mean we shouldn't step in when an animal needs our protection. We absolutely should!!

But perhaps we can do so while still seeing the animal as whole.

As courageous. As sovereign.

What if, instead of meeting them only with sadness, we meet them with respect?

Instead of seeing a helpless life, we see a soul whose story is far greater than we can perceive.

And perhaps that changes the energy we bring - not one of anger or pity alone, but one of love, honour and deep compassion.

Compassion honours another being. Pity diminishes them.
